Sunday Reflection: Why Jesus Is the Only Begotten Son of God

The phrase “only begotten Son” originates from Bible passages such as John 1:14 and John 3:16. The original Greek term used is monogenēs (μονογενής), which combines:

  • monos = only, alone, unique
  • genēs = kind, type, or origin

So monogenēs doesn’t mean “only child” or “only created.” Instead, it means: “the only one of its kind” or “the one who shares the same essence.”

So when Scripture says Jesus is the only begotten Son, it’s declaring something profound: Jesus is uniquely God’s Son—eternally, fully, and inseparably divine.

The Historical and Cultural Context

In Jewish culture, to be called a “son of” often meant to share the nature or essence of something. So when Jesus calls Himself the Son of God, it does not mean that God “gave birth” to Jesus in a physical or biological sense. Instead, He’s claiming:

  •   Equality with God (John 5:18)
  •   A unique, divine status no human could claim without blasphemy

Jews understood that God cannot be divided, so for Jesus to be called the “begotten Son” of God implied:

  •   He comes from God in the fullest, eternal sense
  •   He shares God’s identity, not as a creature, but as a co-equal

“Begotten” means of the Same Kind. And, “Only Begotten Son of God” simply means that He’s the only human that is of the same kind or nature as God.

In John 5:17–18, Jesus refers to God as “my Father,” not our Father. The Jewish leaders understood exactly what He meant: “He was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” Jesus was understood. He was clearly claiming divine Sonship—something no man could rightly claim without blasphemy.

This is why they sought to kill Him. To the Jewish mind, Jesus was either committing the highest blasphemy or speaking the truth that God Himself had come in the flesh.

Our Sonship Is Adoptive and Gracious

Believers, or followers of Jesus, are not called begotten sons of God; they are called children of God through faith in Jesus (John 1:12, Galatians 3:26). Believers are adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:15, Ephesians 1:5). Our relationship is based on grace, not divine essence. We share in the privileges of sonship (access, love, inheritance), but not the divine nature in the way Christ does.

We are created beings, made holy through Christ, not divine ourselves.   It’s because of His perfect sonship, life, death, and resurrection that we can call God “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6). Jesus is the Firstborn among many brothers and sisters (Romans 8:29). He leads the way into a family relationship with God.

Jesus’ Sonship: Divine, Eternal, and Unique

The Bible is clear: Jesus is not a created being. He is the eternal Son, who existed before all time with God the Father:

  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).
  • The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being (Hebrews 1:3).

Jesus shares in the divine nature of the Father:

  • Never had a beginning. There never was a time when the Son did not exist.
  • He gives life (John 5:21)
  • He judges the world (John 5:22)
  • He receives honor equal to God (John 5:23)

Did Jesus Prove It?

It’s one thing to claim to be the Son of God. It’s another thing to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Jesus did just that through His miraculous works as recorded in the Gospels, especially the Gospel of John.

John, an eyewitness, doesn’t just present miracles as random acts of compassion. He calls them “signs”: intentional, supernatural demonstrations of Jesus’ divine identity.

John, in his eyewitness report, demonstrated that Jesus performed a series of miraculous signs that powerfully showed He was the only begotten Son of God, fully divine and uniquely sent by the Father. He turned water into wine at a wedding, revealing His authority over nature. He healed a dying boy from a distance, proving His power over sickness and space. He restored a crippled man on the Sabbath, displaying both compassion and divine authority. With five loaves and two fish, He fed over 5,000.

He walked on water, demonstrating authority over all creation, and healed a man born blind, a feat never seen before, exposing spiritual blindness and stirring bold faith. His greatest pre-crucifixion miracle was raising Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb, proving His authority over life and death itself. And above all, Jesus confirmed every claim by rising from the dead himself. His resurrection is the ultimate sign that He is truly the Son of God, victorious over sin, death, and the grave.

Many religious leaders have claimed to speak for God, but only Jesus backed up His claims with mighty miracles and a resurrection from the dead. While the founders of many religious groups are still in their graves, Jesus’ tomb is empty. His resurrection is the ultimate proof that He is truly the Son of God, and the only one worthy of our faith and worship.

Why This Matters—for You

There is more than enough evidence for any fair inquirer to investigate these claims and respond accordingly.  The Christian faith is a faith grounded in evidence. The entire Gospel of John was written to show that evidence so that you may believe. Many throughout history have investigated these claims and believed.

Some choose not to believe, not for lack of evidence, but for the implications of that evidence. Belief in Jesus would require the surrender of their usual way of life. For them, the cost is too high, so they choose denial or hide under “lack of evidence.” People want God to perform on their terms, but faith is about surrender and trust, not just proof.

If Jesus is God, then His words have ultimate authority. His claims can’t be brushed aside as opinion. If He is the Son of God, His message is truth. If Jesus is God’s son, He alone can bring you to the Father. Unlike Jesus, we are not God’s children by nature. But through faith in Him, we are adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:15). If Jesus is divine, He deserves your loyalty, trust, surrender, and worship.

To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12).
