Sunday Reflection: God’s Authority Over All Creation

In the beginning, God spoke, and the world came to be. His Word was the creative force behind the universe, bringing order out of chaos and life out of nothing. The opening verses of the Bible in Genesis 1 capture this profound truth:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3 NLT)

God’s Word, spoken into the void, brought forth light, separated the waters, and formed the heavens and the earth. Through His spoken word, He established the very order of the universe. The Creator’s Word has power—power to shape, to form, to give life where there was none.

Fast forward to the first century AD in the Middle East, and we see this same creative and life-giving power embodied in Jesus, the Word made flesh. John, a disciple of Jesus and one of the eyewitnesses, brings this mystery to our attention:

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.” (John 1:1-3 NLT)

Jesus, the Son of God, was present at the beginning of creation. He was not only the Word through whom the universe was created but is also the Word incarnate, the very manifestation of God’s creative power in human form. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated this divine authority in astounding ways. His spoken word had the power to heal the sick, calm the storms, and even raise the dead.

Consider the story of Jesus healing the servant of a Roman centurion. The centurion, in great faith, told Jesus that He only needed to say the word, and his servant would be healed. Jesus marveled at his faith and responded:

“Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” (Matthew 8:13)

With those words, the servant was healed. Jesus didn’t need to physically touch him or even be present in the room. The authority of His spoken word was enough to restore health and order.

Similarly, in the story of Jesus calming the storm, the disciples were terrified as a violent windstorm struck their boat. In their fear, they woke Jesus, who was sleeping peacefully. He stood, rebuked the wind and the waves, and said, “Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39). Immediately, the storm ceased, and there was complete calm. His words, spoken with authority, brought peace and restored order to nature’s chaos. Jesus’s disciples were astonished. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” Little did they realize, He is the same Creator God who brought order from the dark, chaotic waters in Genesis.

And in the most profound demonstration of His power, Jesus spoke to the dead. When Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days, Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43). At His command, the dead man walked out of the tomb, alive again. Through His Word, Jesus reversed death and restored life.

These examples reveal the unchanging nature of God’s authority. The same God who spoke the universe into existence, bringing order and life, is the same God who walked the earth in Jesus, healing, restoring, and resurrecting. The power of His Word remains the same—then, now, and forever. God’s Word whether in creation or incarnation is the ultimate source of life, order, and renewal.

And the good news is that God’s Word is still at work today—reversing disorder and restoring life. He is still speaking, still bringing order to chaos, and still breathing life into dead places. Many people today testify to how God’s Word has transformed their lives—bringing healing to their bodies, restoring relationships, renewing hope, and offering forgiveness. His Word has the same power to reconstruct broken lives and bring them into alignment with His divine purpose.

Perhaps you are reading this and feel that your life is in disorder—broken, confused, or in need of restoration. Know that the same God who constructed the universe can reconstruct your broken life today. The same God who spoke the universe into being, the same God who spoke peace to a chaotic storm, is fully able to speak peace into the chaos of your life, healing to your wounds, and restoration to the broken pieces of your life.

In other words, Jesus is on a mission to redeem and renew what was broken:

Where there is hurt, He brings healing and forgiveness.

Where there is despair, He brings hope.

Where there is sadness, He brings joy.

Where there is darkness, He brings light.

And where there is disorder, he brings order.

Jesus invites you today to be part of His Kingdom, and to experience a restored relationship with Him, and the power of His Word in your life. So now is the time to fix what’s been broken in your life for so long. It’s time to set right what has been wrong. It’s time to find your way to where you truly belong— the Kingdom of God. Trust in Him and let the power of His Word bring healing, peace, and restoration to your life.
